Some schools prefer doors that students can lock in an emergency. The second option enables existing school classroom doors to be retrofitted with secondary hardware which might include items such as a thumb turn lock. Compliance with this standard is already required by all of the model codes for doors that are fire rated but it is reiterated in the ifc s classroom security section to reinforce that any modifications and or products used for classroom security on fire doors must meet the nfpa 80 requirements including testing and listing the locking.

This device falls in line with safety codes as well as being operable by members of the handicap community. Many doors that do not have hardware that allows teachers to lock it from inside the classroom can be locked by turning a thumb turn or by pushing a button on the door. The nasfm guidelines and bhma code change proposals do not state specifically how the locking of classroom doors is to be accomplished which gives schools. Doors to be lockable from inside the classroom without opening the door as well as requiring a means of unlocking the door from the ingress side for staff or emergency responder access.
